Phoning It In

John Boehner takes a swing at energy independence

So, remember that protest the Republicans were having on floor of the House where they complained about Congress refusing to sell America’s coastline to big oil? Remember them calling it the ‘House Oil Party’ and comparing it to the Boston Tea Party?

Here’s Minority Leader John Boehner & Minority Whip Matt Blunt talking about it:

It’s not a request we make lightly. But the American people are suffering…we’ve called on the Speaker to call Congress back into an emergency session this month and schedule a vote on the American Energy Act. We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.”

Boehner again:

Congress doesn’t deserve a break — not while families and small businesses are struggling under the weight of sky-high fuel costs.

Boehner just a few days ago:

“The nationwide House GOP energy protest is making history, and we are writing to announce that the Call to Arms will continue…with your help, we will keep the pressure on the Speaker until she gives the American people the energy vote they want, need and deserve.”

Hey, this protest looks pretty serious.  Maybe we Democrats should be worrie–wait, what’s this?

Boehner At Home Golfing While House Colleagues Conduct Oil Drilling Protest On Capitol Hill

Over the weekend, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) urged Members to return to the Capitol, “although they themselves didn’t show up

But what has Boehner been doing while his comrades are fighting the good fight? Golfing. The Washington Post’s Ben Pershing reports:

Boehner also has found time to squeeze in a couple rounds of golf. Scores reported by Boehner himself to a United States Golf Association site show that he posted an 85 sometime this week at his home course, Wetherington Golf & Country Club in West Chester, Ohio.

Boehner was also spotted at another Ohio golf course this week raising money for his “Freedom Project” political action committee.

Oh.  So, when John Boehner says Congress needs a break I guess he’s not referring to himself.

Come on guys, this is just sloppy.  Your leader is phoning it in and your press coverage has dropped off a cliff.  What kind of opposition party are you? How lazy can you be?

Then again, of course the GOP isn’t taking their protest very seriously–this isn’t some brave revolt being staged on behalf of the American people.  This is the Republican Party mugging for the cameras in the hopes of getting big fat checks from the oil industry (just like John McCain!).

Of course, watch the GOP drop their demand for more drilling as soon as they have to vote on the New Energy Reform Act–crafted by 5 Democratic Senators and 5 Republican Senators, supported by Barack Obama and opposed by John McCain.

NERA opens up offshore drilling (but lets the states whose coasts would be affected vote on whether or not to allow it); in addition, it closes tax loopholes that are exploited by the oil companies.

I guarantee you these same Republicans who are demanding offshore drilling right now are going to oppose NERA.  Why? Because it raises taxes on oil companies, and the GOP is only making an issue of drilling to please the oil industry.

If the GOP opposes NERA, it shows that all of their talk about drilling–including their House protest–are nothing but ploys to impress big oil.
